I Ate Julia

Aug 31st, 2009 by graham | 3

Further to my last post I can add to the list of new things I have eaten in China. In my last post I mentioned jellyfish and scorpion. Now I can add a big fat beetle called Zhiliao (pronounced “julia”). They can be heard in the trees making a loud noise like a power-saw.

Yummy!

Yummy!

Before trying them I had stop thinking about what they look like. I kept telling myself it was no worse than a prawn, just culturally ‘different’. My Chinese friends will wonder what all the fuss is about, but believe me, we do not normally eat this sort of thing in the UK.

Once I had tried one I decided I like them so much I had a lot of them.

I think I saw some of those on a film with John Hurt. As I remember, one of them burst out of his stomach when he was least expecting it.

Don’t even think of bringing those back to the office! :)

Take one back for my Dad. Looks like the kind of thing he’d really enjoy ;-)
