Why do atheist not take responsibility for the atrocities done in the name of atheist ideologies, while expecting all Christians to carry the guilt of all so called Christian atrocities?
This is the question put by Dinesh D’Souza in his excellent book ‘What’s So Great About Christianity’.
D’Souza writes about the ‘big three’ atheist mass killers, Stalin, Hitler and Mao. He quotes various sources in an attempt to tot up the scores resulting from these atheistic ideologies. It is thought that Mao’s regime tops the list with 70 million deaths (people debate these numbers but all agree to is ranking to first place as the most murderous person in human history). Stalin regime is thought to have killed 20 million with Hitler way behind.
Pol Pot ‘only’ killed about 1.5 million to 2 million, but that was within a smaller population so his regime actually killed more, in proportion to the population size than Stalin or Mao.
D’Souza then made a different calculation. He compared these figures with the numbers of deaths during the Crusades, the Spanish Inquisition, etc over a period of 500 years – those killings laid at the door of Christianity. His result is that those deaths over a 500 year period amount to 1 percent of the number of deaths caused by the atheist mass killers mentioned above, over a time period of only a few decades.
So why do atheist not take responsibility for the atrocities done in the name of atheist ideologies? Perhaps they would rather not admit that atheism is the most murderous ideology in history!
