Good News for British Teens

Mar 11th, 2008 by graham | 2

School-leavers are to be encouraged to swear an oath of allegiance to the Queen under new government proposals being unveiled on British citizenship.

This is the trumpeted headline in the news today. It is the new supposedly brilliant idea of the government to encourage good citizenship and engagement with society among Britain’s young people.

I think it will be very popular with teens. There is little to rebel against now. Young people look at their parents and see people who marched in political demonstrations, experimented with drugs, sex and rock & roll. All they seem to have managed is to hang out in groups in the corner of a dismal sports field or public park and get drunk.

At last something they can rebel against. Think of the kudos of being the first in your school to refuse to swear an oath of allegiance to the Queen, to declare youself republican, even if you don’t know what it means.

How is it possible for politicians be so out of touch or so badly advised?

I think one of the reason so many young people are turning to Jesus is because they want a cause to live for that is worthy of them. Jesus offers that and more. That is the answer to lack of youth engagement and good citizenship.

Oh dear. I hope the Partido Popular (Spanish conservatives - who lost the election two days ago - yay!) don’t get hold of this idea and propose swearing allegiance to the King. In the towns of Catalonia and the Basque Country, swearing allegiance to the monarch would probably generate the same level of euphoria as among Northern Ireland Catholics!

Yeh the back lash has only just begun from Scottish and Welsh nationalists who have promised to use their devolved powers to block this. It’s such an archaic thing to do, it’s totally out of place in this century and it’s absolutely potty!
