Ordinary Obedience

I watched a video recently of a preacher boldly doing his stuff. His confidence seemed in equal proportion to his lack of biblical knowledge.

A particular thing that irritated my was when he said “God never asks you to do what you are naturally able to do. God always asks you to do what is beyond your reach.” He went on to tell his audience that God did that in order to stretch their faith and develop it.

What a load of rot! God may, sometimes, but I object to the use of the words ‘never’ and ‘always’.

Shortly after that I was at a conference and a speaker used the term “ordinary obedience” [to Christ]. I prefer that because I know that it is when a believer is trying to be full of faith in the ordinary that they truly display Christ’s glory.

I am going to preach on that on Sunday.

  1. Excellent point!

Perhaps it was communion that he was talking about. and that when communion is served it should be held beyond the person’s reach so they have to stretch. Even as I wrote that I was thinking that it may be only a matter of time before someone tries it.
