Avatar and the White Saviour
My friend John is feeling smug at the moment. He had noticed the racism in the new film Avatar and had commented on it in his blog.
“Some have lauded the story for being an excellent allegory of American foreign policy. Allegory? It is American foreign policy! Thanks to Tony Blair and his dodgy dossier, it was Britain’s too. I suppose the writer’s intentions were good but the saviour still ends up being an American. Couldn’t it have been the natives who saved themselves? Strangely, the end up being saved by the same character who brought about their destruction in the first place! Wow, thank you, you kicked me in the teeth and then paid for me to go to the dentist.”
Now others are catching up and it is a topic of comment in the press.
