John Smith first demonstrated this knot in 1990

In a second-hand bookshop, sitting in the tea room at the back of the shop, I spied this book, The Ultimate Encyclopedia of Knots.

At £3 I decided it was a ‘must buy’. What does it say about me that I should happily read a book about knots?!

I came to the mention of the Icicle Knot on page 104. This is what it says:

“As an extension of his double pile hitch, John Smith first demonstrated this astonishing contrivance in May 1990 at the eighth Annual General Meeting of the International Guild of Knot Tyers, when he hung suspended by it from a splicing fit (taper down).”

Now after reading this, my mind is filled with numerous questions: Who is John Smith and why is he into knot tying? Who are the International Guild of Knot Tyers, and what is their Annual General Meeting like? Is it a fun place to be? I could got on…

I could probably find most of the answers on the internet, but I think living with them unanswered adds to the richness of my life.
